As she sits alone in her space capsule, Laura suddenly hears a knocking sound coming from the other side of the capsule. It turns out that Chris had forgotten to press his gravity button, and he is stuck next to her on the other side of the room after pressing it. A few days pass and Laura gets used to her self-imposed solitary life, becoming intimate with her digital tablet and periodically communicating with Chris over video calls. One morning, when she wakes up, the tablet informs her that over 100 people have logged onto the ship's website. She is unable to find any of them, but they are all looking for her husband Chris. As time goes by, Laura is shown that the passengers are generally becoming more comfortable with their self-imposed solitude, including her. One night, after playing with the tablet again, she receives a video call from Michael Sheen informing her that they are too far away to make it back to Earth in time before the colonisation ends. He says that there is no way Laura will ever get off the ship alive if she stays onboard. He offers her a way out, however. He will drop off a device to trigger the ship's self-destruct sequence in exchange for her moving into the lower deck of the ship. She is hesitant at first but agrees in the end when she does not see any other option for herself. She triggers the device, and she leaves her capsule to make her way to the lower decks of the ship. Laura spends some time looking for Chris, but eventually comes across Dr Smith (Laurence Fishburne), who claims that he cannot remember his family or where he came from. Laura also finds that Chris has been left behind on board, stuck in an oxygen tank under 80 meters of water with no way out.
